4 Tips on Stainless Steel Laser Cutting by 10000W+ Fiber Laser

According to Technavio, the global fiber laser market is expected to grow by US$9.92 billion in 2021-2025, with an annual growth rate of about 12% during the forecast period. The driving factors include the increasing market demand for high-power fiber lasers, and “10,000 watts” has become one of the hot spots in the laser industry in recent years.

In line with market development and user needs, Golden Laser has successively launched 12,000 watts, 15,000watts, 20,000 watts, and 30,000 watts of fiber laser cutting machines. Users also encounter some operational difficulties during use. We have collected and sorted out some common problems and consulted cutting engineers to give solutions.

In this issue, let’s talk about stainless steel cutting first. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, compatibility, and toughness in a wide temperature range, stainless steel is widely used in heavy industry, light industry, daily necessities industry, building decoration, and other industries.

Materials Thickness Cutting Method Focus
Stainless Steel <25mm Full power continuous laser cutting Negative focus. The thicker the material, the greater the negative focus
> 30mm Full peak power pulse laser cutting Positive focus. The thicker the material, the smaller the positive focus

Debug Method

Step1. For different power BWT fiber lasers, refer to the Golden Laser  cutting process parameter table, and adjust the stainless steel cutting sections of different thicknesses to achieve the best results;

Step2. After the cutting section effect and cutting speed meet the requirements, adjust the perforation process parameters;

Step3. After the cutting effect and perforation process meet the requirements, batch trial cutting is performed to verify the consistency and stability of the process.

Precautions

Nozzle Selection: The thicker the stainless steel thickness, the larger the nozzle diameter is, and the higher the cutting air pressure is set.

Frequency Debugging: When nitrogen cutting stainless steel thick plate, the frequency is usually between 550Hz and 150Hz. The optimal adjustment of frequency can improve the roughness of the cutting section.

Duty Cycle Debugging: Optimize the duty cycle by 50%-70%, which can improve the yellowing and delamination of the cutting section.

Focus Selection: When nitrogen gas cuts stainless steel, the positive focus or negative focus should be determined according to the material thickness, nozzle type, and cutting section. Usually, negative defocus is suitable for continuous medium and thin plate cutting, and positive defocus is suitable for thick plate pulse mode cutting without layered section effect.
